How to Find Your European Clothing Size (in the Least Confusing Way)

A trip to Europe? Exciting. Trying to decipher your European clothing size? Not so much. Though the size chart overseas is entirely different from the one we’re used to stateside, it doesn’t have to be tricky. Here’s how to find your just-right fit.

Euro vs. U.S. sizing

Know Your U.S. Size
Standard American women’s apparel sizes can range from 0 to 24. Finding the one you most often choose is the first step in figuring out your corresponding European size.

Add 28 or 30
A quick way to find your closes
t fit is to add to your standard American apparel size. For example, if you’re shopping for European sizing, add 28 or 30 to your American size; for UK sizing, add 2; for French conversions, add 30; and for your Italian size, tack on 34. Meaning? If you’re an American size 6 in women’s, try a European size 34, UK size 8, French size 36, or Italian size 40 first. Every manufacturer is different, though, so be sure to look for notes or comments about the fit.

Don’t Forget
Double check that you are looking at the right country or origin on the manufacturer’s sizing chart to confirm which method of translation you should use.

Now that you know how to convert your apparel size, it’s time to book that virtual Euro trip (ahem, online shopping spree) and put your newfound knowledge to use.
