Mani Monday: The Modernist Manicure
Forget a single hue. Victoria Shen, graduate of Boston’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts and creator of the Modernist Manicure pop-up nail salon, is all about replicating popular 20th-century paintings onto nails. Rothko. Mondrian. Pollock. You name it, Shen does it.
And (drumroll) she does it for free.
Too good to be true? I had to try it and see for myself. When you arrive, you’re welcomed warmly and asked to pick a modernist painting from a catalogue provided. Apparently Piet Mondrian’s paintings are a big hit with Shen’s clientele, but I opted to get Ellsworth Kelly’s “The Meschers” canvassed onto my nails.
The verdict? I adore it, and applaud Shen’s efforts to fuse the worlds of art and beauty. In her own words, “I want to have conversations and give people an art experience that they may not get in an art gallery.”
