The Bag Guru: Cassandra Connors of Bella Bag

We all know the power of a classic handbag. Whether you’re in need of the perfect silhouette for your lifestyle or body type or just want to invest in a timeless treasure of your own, bag guru Cassandra Connors of Bella Bag is here to help. Here, she reveals her bag secrets.

Rue La La: Let’s talk handbags. What is the most versatile shape or size for a bag?
Cassandra: I would say that a classic tote is the most versatile shape. I love a bag that’s 13 inches wide or slightly larger. This size isn’t overbearing on anyone’s body so it’s a good size for everyday necessity, but large enough that you can put most laptops or your kids’ toys in there too. The Chanel Grand Shopping Tote (GST) is a great example of something that I love.

RLL: You’re a handbag guru. Can you tell us which bags work best based on body type?
Cassandra: There aren’t any hard-and-fast rules, but in general, there are some guidelines that can be helpful. First, choose something that is the opposite of your body type and something that creates contrast. For example, if you are very thin, try a messenger bag. It will sit on your hips and add some curve. On the other hand, if you’re curvy, choose something structured with clean lines.

RLL: Which bag silhouettes should we use for special occasions, everyday, and the office?
Cassandra: Well, all of us love that perfect clutch for evening, or a strong-lined tote for the office, and a hobo bag for day. But, I definitely think you can go “out of the box.” For example, one of my best friends paired a light-toned Chanel Mini Flap, which she wore crossbody, with her wedding dress. She didn’t overdo the jewelry and it was fantastic!

RLL: How fun! What is your number one rule for selecting a handbag?
Cassandra: Get something classic that you adore! I truly believe that you should invest in something that isn’t a flash-in-the-pan trend, something that will hold its value, and that you aren’t buying to impress anyone. Be true to yourself (and your wallet!).

RLL: We have to know – any last tips or tricks for incorporating a handbag into an outfit?
Cassandra: If you aren’t wearing much jewelry, choose a bag that has chunky hardware or a chain strap. If you’re wearing a bright color, don’t be afraid to embrace colorblocking and use a handbag that is also bright. Also, have a staple evening bag. Instead of spending lots of money on clothes, I buy lots of basics and accessorize with my bags.
