That’s right. The season of invited (and occasionally uninvited) guests is upon us, so it’s time to prepare for the onslaught of entertaining. There are some areas that are easy to hide – as in, the bedroom door effortlessly masks untidy clothes and unmade beds – but one area you can’t skimp on? The bathroom.
I’m no Suzie Homemaker, but I’ve discovered some fast and easy ways to spruce up my powder room to make sure everyone who walks through my door thinks I’m the world’s best host.
Step 1: Add a table
This was probably the most impactful change I made. Even though my bathroom is small (ahh, city living), a slender, tall table creates room for cozy touches that make every guest feel right at home. I went with a nautical theme and stacked coral and other beach finds in a vase, but fresh or dried flowers would be another great addition.
Step 2: Work with your colors
Shower curtains can serve as great color inspiration, and taking a cue from my multicolored geometric variation, I worked in blue and turquoise towels and scented candles in different hues of purple. Get creative with how you display your towel sets (layering and alternating patterns is a must) – your friends and family will be floored.
Step 3: Put everything in baskets
I’m convinced baskets make everything look put-together and adorable. Roll up extra towels and fill a larger basket. Make sure to include big towels, hand towels, and washcloths – it’s everything they might need, stashed stylishly within reach.
Step 4: His and Her baskets (this is the clincher)
Packed with a random assortment of I-might-need-this essentials (I raided the travel section at my closest CVS), this is the tiny touch that makes your guests think you went all out. Don’t go overboard, just stick to the basics: body mist and makeup remover for the girls; shaving cream and deodorant for the guys.
