SPACEStv: Three Inspiration-Worthy Segments

If it seems like home decorating has seen a total pop culture resurgence lately, it’s because, well, it has – thanks to shows like Extreme Makeover, Design Star, and pretty much anything else on HGTV. Following suit, SPACEStv is offering up bite-size YouTube segments for design-lovers everywhere. Every week for a month, I’ll be exploring some of our favorite series from these decorating gurus. Here’s the first peek:

Take Me Home:

Adorable host Arden Myrin propositions strangers on the street to – you guessed it – take her home.

In this episode, we see the glamorous side of Harlem. This apartment is gorgeous (the highlight? A beautiful kitchen with luxe touches like tiled walls and leather barstools). The bedroom was spacious enough to fit the biggest bed I’ve ever seen and three dressers (is this really Harlem?!), plus an ingenious road-bike-made-stationary bike (hello, at-home gym). This apartment epitomized how Harlem maintains its special neighborhood charm while infusing the swank factor you’d expect in Manhattan.

Your Place is a Deal Breaker:

If you ever thought moving in together was simple, this three-part segment brings the inherent roadblocks to the forefront. In this episode, Ashley and Eric have drastically different visions of how they see their home. Eric, an artist always in search of inspiration, is all about vibrant décor, highlighted by a divisive poster of Barack Obama hanging above the bed. Ashley is a yogi, searching for a serene haven and a home that brings the elements of nature in.

Interior designer/host Vanessa Deleon balances these two seemingly conflicting desires with ease, incorporating muted tones with pops of oranges and reds. A wall decal and hanging swing chair add Eric’s requisite element of inspiration, while Ashley’s beloved wicker baskets fit seamlessly into Vanessa’s design. No word on what happened to the ever-looming Obama poster, though.

Tiny Eclectic Amazing Spaces:

If you’ve ever lamented your tiny apartment, this is the series for you. In this segment, we see how great design can transform a place – even when working with just eight feet across. Vanessa Deleon – the same couple-compromiser extraordinaire from Your Place is a Deal Breaker – showcases her office in New Jersey, housed in a former alley between two buildings (complete with Harry Potter-esque street address: 934 ½).

The office is functional and streamlined while boasting loads of glamorous touches (who doesn’t love sparkling chandeliers?). The intact brick wall from the neighboring building adds a modern edge to the space, and hanging illustrations of Vanessa’s past designs serve as a walk-through portfolio for visitors. My favorite idea? Wall-mounted bookcases, which make the most of the office by freeing up floor space, while also serving as functional storage.
