Best in Show: NYFW Spring 2013 Beauty Trends

Along with all the fashion trends stalking the New York runways (which we’ll get into next week), there was plenty of news on the beauty front, too, with these landing as the top ten hair and makeup trends for spring.

TAKE A BROW
Strong, well-defined eyebrows will continue to be big next season, as seen on the runways at Calvin Klein, Zac Posen, Marc Jacobs, Thakoon, Alexander Wang, and Narciso Rodriguez. At threeASFOUR, the girls sported purple Vulcan monobrows. Time to invest in a good brow pencil, ladies!

MY LITTLE PONY(TAIL)
Ponytails both low and high (the latter often accompanied by volume at the crown) were all the rage at Richard Chai, Marissa Webb, Costello Tagliapietra, Brandon Sun, Kaelen, and Rachel Roy. Whether stick straight or wavy, all looked very pretty and are easy to achieve at home. Marchesa finished their ponytails with tiny crisscrossed braids.

PLAITS, PLEASE
Speaking of braids, sleek or messy plaits competed with wild, crimped ‘dos for best in show at Jason Wu, Chris Benz, Betsey Johnson, Tory Burch, Kimberly Ovtiz, Cynthia Rowley, Gemma Kahng, and The Row. Some shows featured models whose frizzy locks were topped by tiny braids for a two-in-one trend. VPL by Victoria Bartlett reigned in side braids with elastic head harnesses while A Detacher tied models’ hair beneath the chin for an equine effect.

BRIGHT EYES
Crayola-bright eyeshadow and liner was one of the season’s biggest beauty trends, as seen at Marimekko (red and green cat’s eyes), Donna Karan (fuchsia liner and lashes), Betsey Johnson (yellow and grey stripes), A Detacher (white wings), Monique Lhuillier (turquoise) and Michael Kors (thick blue liner in the crease of the lid). Elsewhere, bold shadow was used to highlight the inner corners of the eye at Lela Rose (neon yellow), Rebecca Minkoff (bright aqua), and Marchesa (glittering gold).

PRETTY IN PINK
Unexpected hair hues — both shocking and pastel — turned up on the runway at Anna Sui (pink and blue hairpieces), Libertine (neon feathered toppers), Marimekko (Rainbow Brite tresses), and Peter Som (pastel extensions). Even Oscar de la Renta got in on the action with bright pink, blue, and yellow strands woven into the models’ otherwise ladylike chignons.

STRAIGHTEN UP
Meanwhile, stick, straight hair was the name of the game at W118 by Walter Baker, Dean Quinn, Jonathan Simkhai, Victoria Beckham, and Carolina Herrera, among others.

NUDE NAILS
Though plenty of designers showed OTT nail art, natural shades are it for spring, as seen at Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Derek Lam, Marc Jacobs, BCBG, and Carolina Herrera. Rodarte‘s models wore handcrafted nude lattice-print fake nails, which took over 150 hours to create.

DEEP SIDE PARTS
Exaggerated side parts were the look du jour at Derek Lam, Hervé Léger, Altuzarra, Yigal Azrouel, Lacoste, Helmut Lang, Suno, Rachel Comey, Calvin Klein, and Phillip Lim. At Erin Fetherston, pieces from the models’ side parts were pulled low across the forehead and tucked behind a headband for an über-feminine take on the trend.

FEELING FLUSH
High cheek blush was the news at Costello Tagliapietra, Whit, and Chris Benz for a young, fresh approach to the flushed cheek look.

ELVIS 2.0
High-volume pompadours and bouffants (worn long or upswept) made an appearance at Ruffian, Katie Gallagher, Clover Canyon, and Carmen Marc Valvo. Time to stock up on the hairspray and perfect your backcomb technique.
