NYFW Invites: Best of Spring 2013

Though designers are moving away from mailing hard Fashion Week invites (preferring to send e-vites instead), there’s still a wealth of creativity on display, whether they come through the letterbox or the inbox. Here are a few of my favorites for the Spring 2013 shows.

In the Let’s Have Fun category, we have A Détacher‘s flocked velvet silhouette invitation depicting creatures in the forest (the email version features 3D wooden animals tromping amid the trees). Anna Sui has a less innocent kind of fun in mind, judging from her invite, which boasts vinyl records, The Sex Pistols, and other punk rock symbols. Marimekko sent its invite in a cheery, striped fabric envelope (that is, sadly, too small to be repurposed as an iPad® case), while Whit fashioned fresh fruit into a whimsical happy face. But the most high-spirited show of the week is likely to be Betsey Johnson‘s 70th birthday bash, with a performance by Miss “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” herself, Cyndi Lauper, and an invite that showcases pics of the designer through the ages on one side, with a (real) hot pink toothbrush on the other, asking the recipient to “brush up on Betsey.”

A slew of designers sent invites proving that Mother Nature is always in style, including Costello Tagliapietra (with a card bearing an image of a tree reflected in a pond), Laura Siegel (cactus in the dusty desert), Rozae Nichols’s Clover Canyon (scrub brush in the sun-bleached desert), Joy Cioci (an expanse of sparkling, blue water), JUMA (a woman morphing into a butterfly), Nautica (a sailboat in motion), Rachel Antonoff (a formal garden blueprint, complete with landscaping legend), and TOCCA (a hot air balloon drifting among cartoon clouds).

Meanwhile, last season’s ode to postcards and mailers continues for spring with Focus Taiwan‘s clever jiffy bag invite, TiA CiBANi‘s DIY-feeling cardboard announcement, and SAUNDER‘s vacation postcard from Viking Bay, Broadstairs, in the UK.

Cinematic glamour is the name of the game for THE BLONDS (whose invite boasts a recreation of Norman Parkinson’s iconic British Vogue shoot with Jerry Hall c. 1975), Erin Barr (with Marilyn Monroe reading the newspaper on a park bench), Anna Francesca (an updated take on The Wizard of Oz), and J.Lindeberg (models channeling ’60s-era Brigitte Bardot and Marcello Mastroianni).

Architectural and scientific elements also found their way into Spring 2013’s invitations, as seen in {EM} Reservoir‘s colorful upside-down houses, General Idea‘s The Last Lumberjack card, MM6/Maison Martin Margiela‘s presentation/store opening announcement, and the colorful glass beakers heralding the 10-year anniversary of experimental label Slow and Steady Wins the Race.

And the Fashion Week after-party invites were pretty cool, too, from the ribbon-entwined card for the MAC book party celebrating late fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez (the snail mail version of which was wrapped in real ribbons) to the twin cassettes heralding photographer Ben Watts’s Mix Tape blowout at Milk to the seductive glimpse behind the keyhole for shoe designer Camilla Skovgaard‘s film debut (titled Hotel Skovgaard: Room 77) to the moody watercolors marking Galeria Melissa‘s NYFW premiere of British fashion illustrator Julie Verhoeven‘s exhibit.

Let the games begin!
