We all know the FENDI “It” bag as Carrie Bradshaw’s super-stylish sidekick in Sex in the City. But the little one-strap wonder known as the Baguette has been making its rounds in fashion circles since 1997. What’s in a bag, you ask? A whole lot of history.
The Name: Much more unique and stylish than a simple breadstick, this iconic handbag gets its clever moniker straight from the source – it’s meant to be carried under the arm like a loaf of French bread. Who knew?
An Ode to Individuality: Creative Director Silvia Venturini Fendi created this purse as a means of self-expression. With more than 600 varying colors and patterns, it’s safe to say her plan to celebrate individuality was a total hit – and the true pioneer of arm candy.
The Fame: While most of us are content with the standard 15 minutes of fame, the Baguette has reveled in 15 years of fame and counting. Silvia Fendi recently reissued six of her favorites from over the years for the bag’s 15th anniversary.
The Making of an Icon: The “It” bag made its small-screen debut on the arm of a very fashionable Carrie Bradshaw in season three of Sex in the City – and they’ve been attached at the arm ever since. In the words of Sarah Jessica Parker herself, “Having the FENDI Baguette was a very big deal, and the gateway to everything else. It really opened the floodgates and influenced the storyline – especially Carrie’s habit of spending more money on fashion than her home.”
