In the spirit of letting my fashion inhibitions run wild, for the remainder of the summer, I’ve decided to experiment with the cropped tops that are popping up everywhere. I like them in theory – bohemian, carefree, and West Coast cool – but since we’ve all seen these short shirts gone wrong (cropped tops and cargo pants… not a match made in ’90s heaven), I have my reservations.
My biggest dilemma about the cropped top is what to pair it with on the bottom. After taking some advice from Refinery29 and Lovelyish, I played around with a few different looks myself. These are my final recommendations:
It’s really all about the balance of the ensemble – the more cropped the top, the more high-waisted or flowy the bottom should be.
- Try a boxier cropped top with a pair of colored skinny jeans for a shopping outing or to catch a film.
– A tied-up blouse paired with a maxi skirt is ideal for perusing the flea market or meeting a friend for coffee.
– Strike a sassy and structured balance with a bustier cropped top, high-waisted pencil skirt, and blazer for a night out with the girls (you’ll be grateful for the option to button up after a few mojitos).
– A crochet crop top with a brightly colored bikini and jean shorts is made for the beach or boardwalk.
