Our NYFW Insider series profiles the behind-the-scenes talent – hair stylists, makeup artists, publicists, show producers, journalists – who make New York Fashion Week a reality. Part 1 of a 3-part series.
NYFW INSIDER: Jenne Lombardo
Executive Director, MADE and Founder, The Terminal Presents. She’s also the Global Fashion Director for W Hotels, working alongside the insanely talented Fashion Next designers.
NYFW, according to Jenne:
“Alongside my team and my partners, I oversee MADE Fashion Week at Milk Studios. I am heavily involved in all aspects of our company from concept, execution, strategy, press, contracts, designers, partner relations, production, and newly added risk management. I start very early. Most of my media appearances are in the morning and then I attend shows for the day and dinners and events in the evenings. I will be attending approximately 50-plus shows this season in NYC alone. People refer to this time as Fashion “Week,” however, when you work in it, you are fully immersed 365 days (and nights) of the year. Anyone who thinks the fashion industry is glamorous has never worked in it. We wouldn’t do it if we didn’t absolutely love it, but we work HARD. The only difference is, we do it in heels.”
NYFW INSIDER: Steven Kolb
Chief Executive Officer of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
NYFW, according to Steven:
“Prior to Fashion Week, the CFDA helps schedule designer shows and assists in organizing Fashion Week. And during Fashion Week, it’s a marathon of attending shows – I will attend about 40. It is all work. We also have The CFDA Health Initiative panel “A Well-Balanced Life” and the opening of IMPACT: 50 Years of the CFDA, an anniversary exhibit celebrating our members at the Museum at FIT.”
NYFW INSIDER: Lee Trimble
A fashion show and event producer in New York. She’s produced shows for Nicole Miller, GANT, Cynthia Rowley, KENZO, Japan Fashion Week in Tokyo, JCPenney, Mandy Coon, and Michael Bastian.
NYFW, according to Lee:
“I will be producing four shows this season, including Concept Korea and Public School. I usually wake up between 4 and 7AM for early shows, and end my day between 1 and 3AM. The job mainly entails ensuring that every aspect of the physical environment for a show is curated and built to reflect the inspiration or message of a designer’s collection, and that things are organized properly so they happen according to schedule. Being a producer is like being the conductor of a symphony or a ringmaster at the circus – you have to make sure tiny details are perfect and work together to make a harmonious big picture – and the majority of the work comes out of that.”
NYFW INSIDER: Fern Mallis
President of Fern Mallis LLC, and a fashion and lifestyle consultant – not to mention the centralized organizer of NYFW. Fern hosts Fashion Insiders with Fern Mallis along with an interview series at the 92Y (Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis, which recently starred Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Norma Kamali). She’s launching Fern Finds, a jewelry collection, on QVC February 10th.
NYFW, according to Fern:
“As the creator of NYFW and having run the event for 19 years, I am no longer involved in the running and overseeing of the shows, however, I am invited by the majority of designers to attend their shows. I will also be interviewing designers and fashion personalities in and around the tents for my radio show that will be broadcasting all week (SiriusXM Stars Channel 107, February 9-16 from 12-1PM). Then it’s trying to get to shows all around town, geting through traffic, finding meals on the fly, never getting enough sleep, and generally having a good time seeing friends and industry colleagues.”
