On Saturday, designer and Project Runway alum Ben Chmura made his StyleWeek Providence debut, showcasing his NIBIRU (and self-proclaimed comeback) collection. We were there to see his sci-fi inspired/contemporary streetwear designs come down the runway, and met up with him post-show to talk the future of fashion and Project Runway’s all-star season.
Rue La La: We were blown away with these designs. Tell us about the inspiration for this line.
Ben: The whole idea comes from a novel called The 12th Planet and its theories about how alien civilizations came to earth and helped man evolve through the dark ages. While they’re here, they’re re-creating streetwear and trying to understand how humans dress and behave.
Rue La La: Part of your futuristic approach is the idea of unisex clothing. Can you tell us more about that?
Ben: There are a few pieces in the collection that are gender-benders. I’m playing with a lot of exaggerated proportions so they could go female or male. I wanted to put more streetwear out there that would blur the lines – I really think it’s the future of fashion.

Spring fashion is seeing a serious trend: pleats, pleats, and more pleats. With awards season in full bloom, Halston Heritage is coming out as the leader of the pack. A red carpet favorite, the fashion house brings saturated ’70s hues and swinging silhouettes to the ballerina-girly look.
Our Halston Heritage Boutique opens today, January 29, 2012 at 11AM ET.

We declare orange the color of the moment when it comes to home décor. Both bold and sophisticated, it injects interiors with a jolt of energy. The best part? As our stylist Maureen tells us, orange accents get along with all color palettes: “I’m a big believer in treating orange like a neutral – in the sense that it goes with everything. It definitely pops against beige, taupe, and grey, but also looks amazing with turquoise, green, purple, and pink.”
Our On the Home Front: A Burst of Orange Boutique opens Friday, January 27, 2012 at 11AM ET.

At Rue, we <3 love. Starting right now, consider Rue your go-to Valentine’s Day headquarters.
Say it: We’ve kicked things off on Facebook, where fans can scribe their own love notes to anyone (or anything) they want the world to know they care about. We’re handpicking some of these pretty little proclamations to take over our ruelala.com login page on V-day (and let’s face it, that trumps any card you gave last year).
Share it: An invite to Rue is way better than chocolate. For two weeks, Members can give $10 and a special valentine “Rue-ism” to make sharing more festive. (Think: old-fashioned valentines, but way better.)
Suit up for it: What to wear, what to wear? And what does your sartorial choice say to the world? On February 1, we’ll open our Valentine’s fashion Boutique, ELLE + Rue La La: What Your V-Day Style Says About You with offerings based on valentine personalities like Ms. Meet the Parents or Mr. Walk on the Wild Side.
Seal it: Once you’re done professing your love and getting dressed up, sign in every day at 11AM ET to shop swoon-worthy style that your S/O is sure to love (we’re talking everything from lingerie and chocolates to spa treatments and way beyond).
Cupid, who? (We’ve got this thing stylishly covered.)

The quickest way to make an outfit feel current? A few key add-ons let us dabble in trends and try out new looks. With that in mind, we pulled together some of our favorite items from The “You Can Never Have Too Many” Sale. For daytime, we’re all about bright colors and preppy-quirky shapes. For evening, metallics are the name of the game: glimmering golds, jewels upon jewels, and heavy-metal accessories.

We spend way too much time in our beds to settle for anything less than love. So, starting from the mattress up, we’re all about building a bed that’s seriously comfy. To find the mattress that’s best for us, we asked our bedding buyer, Lynne, for a few tips.
Tip #1
Look for a high coil count, as more coils indicate better support. An average queen-sized mattress has 500 to 750 coils, so with 825 coils the pillow- and plush-top mattresses are a great choice.
Tip #2
Go for foam. A layer of memory foam on a coil mattress always adds comfort.
Tip #3
Always get a guarantee. After a month, you’ll know if it’s the right mattress for you, so a 30-day sleep guarantee is ideal.
