Doing A Little Good: Nicole Kidman – A Curated Boutique to Benefit the Stanford Women’s Cancer Center
An Interview With The Inspiring Actress & Mother

Rue La La: Rue is about a life of style. And we hear you’re quite the renaissance woman yourself. What are your other avenues for self-expression?
Nicole: I love interior design. It’s all about stimulating the five senses. I love to make a house warm, I like things to smell good, I love things to taste good. As a mother, I love to create a nurturing environment for my children. A place where they can explore their creativity.
Rue La La: Your Boutique benefits the Ovarian Cancer Program at Stanford University’s Women’s Cancer Center. Tell us about how you got involved with the program.
Nicole: I met Dr. Jonathan Berek when I was going through some issues and had an ectopic pregnancy. I want to support Dr. Berek as he does an enormous amount of work and research at the Stanford Women’s Cancer Center. We need to support the research doctors who are devoting their lives to helping people. This is something that I think can be cured – I really believe that. And if we can help eradicate these cancers from the planet, what an extraordinary thing!
Rue La La: What is it about this issue that speaks to you?
Nicole: My mother had breast cancer when I was 17, so I was personally affected by the disease. I saw a woman suffering, a woman who I loved, who was the heartbeat of our family, going through such distress. This is where I’m putting my efforts right now – keeping our mothers, sisters, and daughters healthy.
Rue La La: You and Keith have a growing family – and you have four beautiful children, Isabella Jane, Connor Anthony, Sunday Rose, and Faith Margaret, who’s almost one! Do you love motherhood?
Nicole: I love nurturing and caring for children. I obviously love my own children, but I feel an enormous connection to children in general. I’ve always been very drawn to them. I think being an actor gives you a very childlike quality. We still get to play a lot, so my sense of play, my spirit of play, is heightened. I think children keep that alive in you.
Rue La La: The holiday season is already upon us! How do you plan to celebrate this year – do you have lots of holiday traditions with your kids?
Nicole: We decorate, we snuggle, we go to church, we see friends and family. And we try to remember that Christmas is not all about “the presents.” It’s a time to reflect.
Rue La La: Do you see yourself and your style in your daughters?
Nicole: I try not to see myself in my daughters. I try to see them as who they are. My 3 1/2-year-old just happens to be absolutely obsessed and delighted with clothes, shoes, and jewelry – anything that sparkles. And my other two daughters, they aren’t interested in any part of it. It’s fascinating watching them evolve.
Rue La La: How would you describe your personal style?
Nicole: I would like to think it’s classic with a twist. I have never been guided by what’s been fashionable – my style is an extension of my strong sense of self.
Rue La La: It’s no surprise: we’re fashion junkies. What are your thoughts on fashion in general?
Nicole: I admire the artistry of fashion and I have been supportive of some of the great designers through the last couple of decades. I really feel that it is an art form and encourage it as it something that gives people something to dream about, yearn for.
Rue La La: Do you have a stand-by designer?
Nicole: One of my best friends is L’Wren Scott. I have been able to watch her build her career, and it’s been lovely to see her grow. I also rely on people that I have followed through the years: Galliano, Lagerfeld, Prada, Nicolas Ghesquière (he designed my wedding dress).
Rue La La: Any other style secrets?
Nicole: To love and to be loved. And then your style comes from within.
