Rue How-To: Never-Fail Packing Tips
There’s no shame in overpacking. But we’re making a promise to ourselves – and our suitcases – to be smarter about it. Here’s our crib sheet:
Create a foundation
Make a bottom layer in your suitcase with shoes and books. (Bonus points if you switch to a Kindle in your carry-on.) Tuck underwear and socks into the shoes.
Bag it
Save dry cleaning bags year-round and place them between each layer as you pack.
One-hit wonder
If you could never find another one like it, it goes in your carry-on, not checked luggage.
Color it in
Everything should go with everything else. Resist the temptation to toss on a favorite pair of brown shoes when everything else is black and white.
Wonder wipe
Pack baby wipes in a carry-on. Perfect for stains on clothes, washing hands or face in a pinch, or a quick tidy-up when housekeeping has come and gone.
