Abby Larson of Style Me Pretty came to Rue during our wedding photo shoot. We picked her brain on all things bridal – pretty gowns, DIY wedding party tips, and her time in the studio.
Rue La La: Purchasing bridal gowns and wedding necessities online is a relatively new idea – what are a few pieces of advice you’d give a bride when picking out her goods online?
Abby: Most of the rules that apply when buying your dress through a brick-and-mortar shop apply when buying your gown online. Select a gown that will flow cohesively with your wedding style. Whether it be rustic, classic, or contemporary, there is always a gown that will take your style to the next level of pretty. Choose silhouettes that are flattering to your body shape. It’s usually helpful to spend a day trying on gowns so that you know what really looks good. It may very well be a cut that you never considered. And last but certainly not least, try to stick to your budget. You will be so much happier and feel even more gorg, if you didn’t overspend on an area where you allotted a certain budget.
Rue La La: What are some guidelines for reception dresses? Should they be similarly styled to the gowns?
Abby: The best part about buying a reception gown is that there are no rules! White and flirty, gold and sexy, long and casual. Anything goes with the reception frock! It’s a time to have a little fun and let your true personality shine through.
Rue La La: What’s a good rule of thumb for bridesmaid dressing?
Abby: In-the-know bridesmaid looks often feature a spectrum of hues in complementary colors and/or a variety of silhouettes that flatter the individual maid. Although there is something so striking about girls all in a row, perfecting matched, perfectly styled, there is something more real, much more layered if they are allowed to choose gowns that really make them feel beautiful.
Rue La La: Any DIY extras that a wedding party can do to make their dresses and suits all their own?
Abby: For the boys, a super cool pocket square in a fun print is a great way to modernize a traditional look. They can bring in the colors of the bridesmaids gown, without matching too closely and the look will be both fun and chic. For the girls, adding a fabric floral belt is a great way to add a bit of pretty to an otherwise classic dress.
